How to choose a used engine: 10 things to check
A used engine is the most sensible way to get a car or machine running again – often for a fraction of the price of a new engine or a major rebuild. But only if it is the right engine and in good condition. Here are the 10 things we check on every engine before we offer it.
1. The exact engine code
The code (for example OM651, N47D20, CAYC or K9K) defines the version – power output, fuel system, Euro standard and ancillaries. Two cars with the same displacement often have different engines, so we always start with the code. If you don’t know it, see how to find your engine code.
2. VIN check
The VIN shows the car’s exact year, model and factory specification. We match the engine code against the VIN to avoid surprises with sensors, wiring or engine mounts.
3. Genuine mileage and history
Ask where the engine comes from and what mileage the donor car had. An engine from a car with known history and paperwork is a much safer purchase than an engine with no past.
4. Compression and condition
A compression test, checks for oil and coolant leaks, running sound (where possible) and the state of the turbo give a clear picture of wear.
5. Timing gear and known weak points
Every engine has typical weak spots – the timing chain on the N47, injectors and dual-mass flywheel on some TDIs, EGR and DPF on modern diesels. A good supplier tells you honestly what to expect and what is worth replacing during fitting.
6. Specification
Check what the price includes: bare block, long block or complete engine with turbo, fuel system, alternator and A/C compressor. That way you compare quotes like for like.
7. Photos of the actual engine
Ask for photos of the exact engine you will receive, not catalogue images. At Dvigateli.bg we send photos and data of the actual engine before you buy.
8. Origin and paperwork
An engine with clear origin and a purchase document protects you from problems at registration and when you sell the car later.
9. Price versus rebuild
Compare the price of a used engine with a major rebuild and with a new engine. A low-mileage used engine is often the best value – see new, used or rebuilt engine.
10. Delivery and fitting
Agree the lead time and how the engine reaches your workshop. If you don’t have a workshop, we can recommend a partner. Before fitting, read what to prepare when replacing an engine.

Frequently asked questions
What mileage is normal for a used engine?
It depends on the engine and its use, but for a passenger car diesel an engine with up to 150,000–200,000 km and known history is usually a good choice. Condition matters more than the number – compression, leaks and maintenance.
Should I replace anything when fitting a used engine?
We recommend oil and filters, the timing kit (if belt-driven or with unknown history), gaskets and the water pump, so the engine starts with clean maintenance.
Can I buy an engine if I don’t know the code?
Yes. Send us the VIN from the registration document or a photo of the engine plate and we will identify the exact code and version.
